I finished animating the holiday road short! That was fun. It was nice just to do a quick film. I think the idea of doing a short seems really daunting because I want it to be good. I went into this short with the idea that it wouldn't be perfect. That it would just be a little silly crappy flash experiment. That helped keep it fun. The short is really silly but I think it'll play well in the Holiday Roads film. I'm happy with it anyway. I can't put the short online yet. Maybe around St. Patrick's day. In the meantime here are some stills.

Hey!!!! I've been busy! I agreed to animate a short film that will play in a feature film of shorts called Holiday Road. Each film maker was assigned a Holiday and the films will play in order of the holidays in a calender year. Me and Bobby got St Patrick's day! A totally awesome holiday! Thats what those leprechaun drawings were for! I'm pretty far along animating it, but I'm just going to post my first few idea sketches. I wanted to make something quick, easy and fun that I could make without killing myself (I still have a full time job and important side project). I like the way its coming out! It's really silly! In a few weeks I'll post stills.

That Movie Show Free LA Screening Poster!

On June 2nd, That Movie Show will run it's 20th and final episode. And on June 7th (Tuesday) we're celebrating at the Downtown Independent in Los Angeles! The theater Serves booze (and has a cool rooftop) and chances are there will be a drinking game.

A few years ago my friend Joice Ozaki game me these little wooden Russian dolls for a birthday gift with the thought that I would paint them. Well I finally did! I've had them displayed with some small cactus plants on a cool old spice rack above the dining room table. It looks nice! Like this:

Hey! I did the episode artwork for this week's Grandma's Virginity Podcast! I love this podcast! Well I love podcats. They really get me through working on something tedious or boring. My favorite Podcast by far right now is the Grandma's Virginity Podcast! So this is very exciting. The podcast is basically 2 hours of Justin Roiland, Ryan Ridley and Jackie Buscarino arguing in a very funny and entertaining way. Its great, I couldn't recommend it enough. Heres a link:

So I've been working on a Star and the Forces of Evil comic and I'm not sure what to do with it yet! My plan is to finish one issue and then figure it out. Maybe I'll put it on the internet someday : ) What with the full time job and other projects I've only been able to finish about a page a week so its been pretty slow moving. I like it though, but I'm already unhappy with some of the pages I did months ago. I wanted to share a few panels on the blog.

Over the summer I had the privilege to work on Warner Brother's MAD now airing on Cartoon Network! Its a great team and was a lot of fun to work on. Its a cartoon variety show in the spirit of the magazine, so every week you had something different to work on and it had to be done fast. I worked primarily as a designer. Here are screen caps from some of the shorts I worked on. They're taken off of youtube so the quality isn't great. These are all from MAD season 1 episodes 1-12.

This is a short animated title sequence I did for Bobby Miller's new web series "That Movie Show." Its really short and only took about 4 hours to do, but I had fun doing it and I like it : )

Star and the Forces of Evil is an idea for an animated series I've been working on here and there for a few years now. It started as a Cartoonstitute pitch, then went to Nickelodeon where a short pilot was made. I really like the idea, and I've decided to make a comic out of it. I'm not sure if I'll be posting the pages on the blog, I might wait until I have a bunch of them and put them on there own site in a few months. Here are a few updated character designs!

I designed the little girl for a women who's looking to publish a childrens book and the rest is from my sketchbook... My default drawings always seem to be cute but slightly deranged naked women. I think drawing them with babies adds a nice touch.

Recently I've been working on the opening title sequence for a soon to be released movie. I can't give away any of the details, other then its a live action movie and just the opening titles are animated. Hare are a few screen caps from the final project. I story boarded the whole thing and did all the character designs. I also painted a couple of the back grounds. Most of the backgrounds were painted by Brigette Barrager, also some by Aygul Idiyatullina. Aygul did all the text work on the names, all the animation was done by Ryan Shaw and Marina Gardner. The compositing was done by Ryan Shaw, Ethan Metzger, Aygul Idiyatullina and Andrew Borno. All things considered, I think our little team did a great job making it look cool.

When I get back to the studio in January I'll upload some of the Visual Development work I did for it and some of the story boards.

It wasn't until about a week later that the mystery of the furniture and planters being moved was solved. It turned out that a man that works for the apartment was going to paint the porch and thats why the furniture was moved. He actually didn't paint the porch until days later.... haha, you'd also think he could have given some warning!

These are the designs for Paul, the little boy dressed as a space man in my film. The one at the bottom is the exploratory designs, on top of that is his turn around and model sheet. This film is going to be a challenge to design. I decided not to color it... I just don't think I'll have time so I'm going to try to make it look as nice as I can in black and white.

I finally have time to work on it now that the school semester is over! Its about a martian girl and thats all I'm going to say for now. I spent the past few days working on her design, then finalized it and did a model sheet and turn around. I also did a painting to try and figure out how the back ground is going to look. I've been working on the boards.
The Star and the Forces of Evil short is going great! I I'd like to post some of the vis dev work from it but I'm not sure if I can at the moment...

This is a little story board assignment I did that I'm thinking about using for my portfolio. Its about a little mouse escaping two foxes. I was watching youtube videos of foxes leaping in the snow to look for mice so I used that for the inspiration. After that are some little vinyettes for class.

This is a little assignment I gave myself to draw some people working out. Also some bikes. hooray! Anddd, I did my little cartoon network shorts pitch and it actually went pretty well! There are more pitches and a lot more steps into it becoming an actual short, but at least I made it though round 1 : )

Fern and Izzy

finally an update! I've been so busy finishing my film and doing end of the school year things I haven't had time. So my 3rd year film ended up being titled "Fern and Izzy, the names of the main characters. It played in the open show and was then selected for the Producers' show screening tonight. I'm very excited : ) On this post I'm putting up screen caps (recreated on photoshop for maxim quality) and back grounds I haven't posted yet. Also, after school is out I'm taking a two week trip to Prague through CalArts to see the city, animation studios and learn about Czech animation.

the one at the top are some character designs for my film... the one under it was an idea for the film's environment (I wanted to try water colors with the designs) but I don't think it works. The two next ones are designs with people and animals where the human character is being betrayed by the animal.. I don't know if I quite got it though. Then animal sketches and under that some crazy big headed alien. Also... I'm 22! everyone in character animation is awesome and I had a great birthday party. : D
